There are moments in a person’s journey through life where they know that they are at the point of no return. For me, that moment was when I stepped on a plane in July of 2011 to go study abroad for six months in Chile. It was a big step for a girl who grew up on a cattle ranch in Washington. I didn’t know what was ahead of me, but I knew that something bigger and greater was waiting for me.
What happened? I fell in love with a man named Felipe. Yeah, I know it sounds cliché…the American girl goes abroad and falls in love with the country and a foreigner and they have a whirlwind romance. It sounds like a two-dollar romance you can pick up at your local supermarket.
That little whirlwind developed into something more. After a six months of great adventures, I had to return to the United States. I didn’t leave my love in Chile though. As I got on the plane with tears rolling down my cheeks, I knew it wouldn’t be the last time I set foot in this country.
Fast forward one year. I graduated from the University of Idaho in December of 2012 and one week later I was on a plane to Chile, but this time to stay. Felipe and I married January 19th, 2013.
Now, I am living in Chile with my husband in Santiago, Chile. This blog is my outlet as I try to maneuver my way through language and cultural barriers, not to mention duel with the visa process of two different countries.
My name is Caitlin, and my journey is just beginning.
